I am Cristina Lago — Spanish writer, illustrator, jurist, and activist based in Brussels.
My work was born from an inner journey that began years ago, when I started painting, compelled by a deep need to draw out the pain I carried within.
During that time, dark images and characters surfaced, leaving a profound psychological and transformative imprint on my life.
Without realizing it, I was engaging in what Jung calls shadow work.
From that same process, my writing began to unfold: those images gradually became words, giving shape to my first literary work,
“La intimidad del agua”.
In the years that followed, I set aside my creative pursuits to devote myself to my professional career within the European Institutions, as well as to the early stages of motherhood.
More recently, I experienced a special encounter that inspired a new series of illustrations exploring the metamorphosis of the soul—when the sacred union weaves the feminine and masculine into a single consciousness:
“The Journey of the Divine Double.”
Today, my work has entered a lighter, more luminous phase—a stage where routine and the simplicity of everyday life become sacred acts, almost ritual in nature.
I perceive my personal path as the Hero’s Journey within the hermetic tradition: a symbolic, archetypal itinerary.
A masterfully woven labyrinth that I have gathered into three collections inspired by Renaissance alchemical works:
- Nigredo — the dark work.
- Rubedo — the transformed fire of union, separation, silence, and the hermit’s withdrawal.
- Albedo — the phase of integration and light, where I now breathe and create.
Although my creations do not directly follow a mystical aesthetic, they are undeniably born from my natural relationship with the unseen.
